Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Addidional Product Information

Glucosamine and chondroitin - the main constituents of shark cartilage - are effective in treating osteoarthritis

Glucosamine is used by the body in the manufacture of collagen, which is the main component of articular cartilage. Chondroitin sulphate acts like "liquid magnets". It helps attract fluid into the proteoglycan molecules. This is important for two reasons: the fluid carries nutrients into the cartilage and acts as a spongy shock absorber. An article in Jama (2000; 1469-1475) reported a review of literature on the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) with glucosamine and chondroitin. The conclusions reached by the investigators were that in patients with OA, glucosamine and chondroitin are effective in improving outcomes.
