Shark Cartilage

Sharks have been around for 400 million years and receive a bad wrap for being distrusted man-eaters. Yet modern science has shown that this perception is largely driven by ignorance, and sharks can become a respected and symbiotic ally to humans…

Sharks are extremely healthy fish. They are (virtually) totally resistant to infections, cancers and circulatory diseases, and have shown the ability to heal and recover from severe injuries. When sharks are exposed to cancer-causing chemicals, they remain healthy with no signs of tumours – months and even years after exposure.

How is shark cartilage beneficial to humans?

Shark cartilage contains two main ingredients: a combination of chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine and mucopolysaccharides. These are vital building blocks for healthy bones, joints and ligaments. Our normal diet does not contain sufficient amounts of these nutrients – especially at times when increased physical demand, old age or disease puts added stress on the body. For centuries, East Asia has recognised the benefits of of the supplement – shark cartilage soup and spiced shark cartilage are part of the traditional cuisine!

Use shark cartilage to treat these conditions:

1. Degenerative Joint Disease and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a disorder that affects the cartilage tissue and the bone underlying the cartilage tissue. Osteoarthritis results in the roughening of cartilage, caused by wear-and-tear or an acute injury. The roughening of the surface of the cartilage causes synovitis, a chemical irritation of the lining of the joint, which in turn leads to swelling and pain around the joint.

Morning stiffness and pain are the earliest symptoms, but with time it may progress to total stiffness and the inability to move the joint. Nordman Shark Cartilage can assist with rebuilding the cartilage, smoothing out the roughness and reducing the swelling and inflammation of the joint.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease which is caused by the inflammation and thickening of the joint lining (synovial membrane). This results in progressive deformation and destruction of the joint. Rheumatoid Arthritis may also affect other organs of the body i.e. heart, lung, kidney and the eyes.

Similar to osteoarthritis, pain and morning stiffness are the most common symptoms. As rheumatoid arthritis is thought to be an autoimmune disease, Nordman Shark Cartilage can be taken as an immune-booster and will help repair compromised joints.

3. Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the progressive loss of bone tissue caused by skeletal weakness, which may cause spontaneous bone fractures especially in the vertebrae and hips. Chronic osteoporosis may lead to deformity of the spine, referred to as “Dowager Hump”. Nordman Shark Cartilage contains calcium and phosphorous, both essential for bone health and to prevent further damage caused by wear-and-tear or injury.

4. Arteriosclerosis

Arteriosclerosis is the process whereby the arterial wall around the heart becomes thickened and loses elasticity. Studies have proven that when chondroitin sulphate (found in shark cartilage) is administered orally for long periods of time, the arteries revert to their original state and the risk of heart disease is significantly reduced.

5. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that is characterised by dry lesions on the surface of the skin. Biologically, it is caused by the overproduction of epidermal cells in the skin organ. As an immune modulator, shark cartilage contains essential nutrients that help rebuild the cartilage and connective tissue of the skin.

6. Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy is a disease of the veins and arteries in the retina of the eye; it occurs in diabetic sufferers who have had the condition for more than 10 years. If untreated, the eye bleeding and swelling of the retina will yield to compromised vision and, in severe cases, may cause blindness.

7. Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive disease of the brain and spinal cord that causes the sheath around the nerves to disintegrate. Taking shark cartilage as a food supplement can assist with rebuilding the sheath around the nerve. It also acts as an immune modulator.

8. Burns and wound care

Nordman Shark Cartilage can be used to treat wounds and burns as it helps with
new tissue formation. In some cases, skin grafts can be avoided if applied early.

9. Sports injuries:

  • Acute and chronic knee injuries
  • Osteomalacia Patella (inflammation of the patella)
  • Shoulder girdle injuries
  • Sprains and fractures
  • Whiplash
  • Spinal and vertebrae injuries
  • Tennis elbow and tendonitis
